Trinity Church Seattle
Welcome

Praise

Collect for Ascension

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

Christ, Whose Glory Fills the Skies
words: Charles Wesley, 1740 · music: LPDM, 2012
1Christ, whose glory fills the skies,
Christ the true, the only Light,
Sun of Righteousness, arise!
Triumph o'er the shades of night:
Dayspring from on high, be near;
Daystar, in my heart appear.
2Dark and cheerless is the morn
Unaccompanied by thee;
Joyless is the day's return,
Till thy mercy's beams I see,
Till they inward light impart,
Glad my eyes, and warm my heart.
3Visit then this soul of mine!
Pierce the gloom of sin and grief!
Fill me, Radiancy Divine;
Scatter all my unbelief;
More and more thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day.
Refrain ×3
More and more thyself display,
Shining to the perfect day.

Confession

Lament — How Long, O Lord?
based on Psalm 13
How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I take counsel in my soul
and have sorrow in my heart all the day?
Psalm 13:1–2
Lament: For those displaced by conflict and famine in the world this week — refugees, the persecuted, those who grieve — we cry out.
How long, O Lord? How long, O Lord?
How long, O Lord? How long?
Consider and answer me, O Lord my God;
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
lest my enemy say, "I have prevailed over him,"
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
Psalm 13:3–4
Lament: For those in our city carrying private grief — illness, broken families, loss of work, loneliness — we cry out.
How long, O Lord? How long, O Lord?
How long, O Lord? How long?
Words of Hope Revelation 21:3–5

"Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."

And he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new."

Christ Is Mine Forevermore
Jonny Robinson and Rich Thompson
1Mine are days that God has numbered,
I was made to walk with Him.
Yet I look for worldly treasure
And forsake the King of kings.
But mine is hope in my Redeemer,
Though I fall, His love is sure;
For Christ has paid for every failing,
I am His forevermore.
2Mine are tears in times of sorrow,
Darkness not yet understood.
Through the valley I must travel
Where I see no earthly good.
But mine is peace that flows from heaven
And the strength in times of need;
I know my pain will not be wasted,
Christ completes His work in me.
3Mine are days here as a stranger,
Pilgrim on a narrow way.
One with Christ I will encounter
Harm and hatred for His name.
But mine is armour for this battle,
Strong enough to last the war;
And He has said He will deliver
Safely to the golden shore.
Bridge ×3
Come rejoice now, O my soul,
For His love is my reward.
Fear is gone and hope is sure,
Christ is mine forevermore.
And mine are keys to Zion city,
Where beside the King I walk.
For there my heart has found its treasure,
Christ is mine forevermore.

Scripture & Sermon

Scripture Reading 2 Samuel 6:1–23 (ESV)

David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim.

And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark.

And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD…

What is your only comfort in life and in death?
All
That I am not my own, but belong — body and soul, in life and in death — to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. He has fully paid for all my sins with his precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He also watches over me in such a way that not a hair can fall from my head without the will of my Father in heaven; in fact, all things must work together for my salvation. Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.

The Lord's Supper
Before the Throne of God Above
words: Charitie L. Bancroft, 1863 · music: Vikki Cook, 1997
1Before the throne of God above,
I have a strong and perfect plea,
A great High Priest whose name is "Love,"
Who ever lives and pleads for me.
My name is graven on His hands,
My name is written on His heart;
I know that while in heav'n He stands
no tongue can bid me thence depart,
no tongue can bid me thence depart.
2When Satan tempts me to despair,
and tells me of the guilt within,
upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end to all my sin.
Because the sinless Savior died,
my sinful soul is counted free;
For God, the Just, is satisfied
to look on him and pardon me,
to look on him and pardon me.
3Behold him there! the risen Lamb,
my perfect, spotless Righteousness,
the great unchangeable I AM,
the King of glory and of grace!
One with Himself I cannot die,
My soul is purchased by His blood;
My life is hid with Christ on high,
with Christ, my Savior and my God,
with Christ, my Savior and my God.
Sending Prayer
All
Father, we give you the coming week and ask that you establish the work of our hands — whether paid or unpaid — so that everything we do would give you glory. And help us, by your Spirit, to be unashamed of the good news of your Son, Jesus Christ — in whose name we pray. Amen.
Be Thou My Vision
words attr: Dallan Forgaill, 6th c. · tr: Mary Byrne, 1905 · versified: Eleanor Hull, 1912
1Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
2Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
3Be Thou my battle shield, sword for my fight,
Be Thou my dignity, Thou my delight.
Thou my soul's shelter, Thou my high tower.
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
4Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High king of heaven, my treasure Thou art.
5High king of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O ruler of all.
Benediction Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
